Dograh is a free, open-source platform for building AI phone agents that answer calls, book appointments and chase payments. It is a developer tool from a small Indian team, pitched against Vapi. You can self-host it for nothing or use its cloud at 1¢ (about 0.75p) a minute, plus your phone and AI model costs. It was #1 Product of the Day and of the Week on Product Hunt in August 2026. My verdict: great value if you are technical, hard work if you are not. ★★★½☆ 3.5/5.

What is Dograh?
Dograh is a toolkit for building AI agents that talk on the phone. You describe the job, such as booking a haircut or reminding a customer about a payment, and it generates a starting conversation flow. You then edit that flow in a visual builder made of nodes: a start, one or more agent steps with their own prompts, and an end.

Under the hood, each call runs through speech-to-text, a language model and text-to-speech, or a single speech-to-speech model. You pick every part. You also connect your own phone provider, such as Twilio, to get a real number. You can test in your browser first with a web call, without any phone number at all.
It is an agent rather than a chatbot because it acts during live calls. It can call your systems through an API, look up a customer in your CRM before dialling, transfer the caller to a human, run outbound campaigns against a contact list and score each call afterwards. Coding agents such as Claude Code can also build and change Dograh agents for you through its MCP server.

How it did on Product Hunt
Dograh finished first on its launch day and first for the week, then joint third for August 2026.
| Launch | Date | Daily rank | Other awards | Upvotes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Dograh: The open source VAPI alternative | 12 August 2026 | #1 Product of the Day | #1 Product of the Week (week of 10 August 2026); #3 Product of the Month (August 2026, shared with AdAnt AI) | 587 |
Upvotes as shown on Product Hunt on 17 October 2026.
For an open-source developer tool, that is a very good result. It beat Grok Bot on both the day and the week. The monthly leaderboard lists Dograh and AdAnt AI both at number three, and both product pages carry a #3 badge. Its GitHub project now shows about 5,600 stars, which is real developer interest.
What Product Hunt users said
- The review score is 5.0 from 2 reviews, both from developers who built working agents.
- The big draw is open source and self-hosting. Reviewers compared it favourably with hosted services such as Vapi, and one had a lead-qualification agent live within two days using the MCP tools.
- Getting started took some exploring. Reviewers asked for starter templates and examples, and the team said templates are on the roadmap.
- One reviewer found that small edits to a live agent, especially the shared global prompt, sometimes broke behaviour that had been working. He asked for a guide to editing prompts safely.
- Commenters asked about latency, failures, privacy and white-labelling. The team said failed speech connections retry, the language model falls back to another model, and white-labelling is allowed.
How much does Dograh cost?
Dograh is free if you run it yourself; its cloud charges a small per-minute platform fee on top of your phone and AI costs.

| Plan | Price | What you get |
|---|---|---|
| Open Source | Free forever | The full platform on your own servers, with no limits and your own API keys |
| Pay as you go | 1¢ (about 0.75p) a minute platform fee; credits from $5 (about £3.76) | Hosted cloud, bring your own keys or use Dograh's models at usage-based rates, 10 concurrent calls |
| Custom volume | Custom pricing | Discounts for committed monthly minutes, priority support by email, Slack or WhatsApp |
| Enterprise | Custom pricing | On-premises or private-cloud deployment, data residency, SSO, audit logs, account manager and custom SLAs |
The pricing page does not mention VAT. There are no annual plans to compare. Remember to budget for your phone provider and AI model bills, which come on top in every plan.
What I like
- It is properly open source under the BSD 2-Clause licence, so you can read, change and keep the code.
- Self-hosting costs nothing in platform fees, and the cloud fee of 1¢ a minute is a fifth of the $0.05 a minute hosting fee Vapi lists.
- Calls, recordings and transcripts can stay on your own servers, and the speech models can run there too.
- You can test a new agent in the browser with a web call, without buying a phone number first.
- The choice of providers is wide: at least seven phone networks and a long list of AI and speech models, so you are not stuck with one supplier.
- A hybrid mode mixes pre-recorded human clips with generated speech, which the docs say lowers latency and speech costs.
What I'd want fixed
- It is not for non-technical owners. Self-hosting needs Docker and a machine with 8 GB of RAM, and even on the cloud you still set up a phone provider and model keys.
- Reviewers want starter templates and safer prompt editing, so expect trial and error.
- The privacy policy, last updated in October 2025, still gives a long section to Gmail access and CRM syncing, which do not match the voice product. It looks out of date.
- The self-hosted version sends anonymous usage data by default. You can switch it off, but it should be opt-in.
- Headline claims such as twice the conversions come with no published evidence.
Who should use it?
Dograh suits a developer, an agency building phone agents for clients, or a technical small firm in a regulated field that needs call data kept in-house. It is the cheapest serious option I have seen for that. If you run a salon, surgery or trades business and just want calls answered, skip it and look at Agentplace, which you set up by describing your business in plain language and which includes an AI receptionist.
Is it safe to use? Privacy and permissions
- Self-hosted, Dograh keeps calls, recordings, transcripts and customer details inside your own servers or cloud account. The code is open, so your own team can check what it does.
- On Dograh's cloud, the privacy policy says it collects audio, recordings, transcriptions and workflow logs. It shares data with hosting and analytics providers, and with services such as Twilio only when you connect them.
- The policy mentions GDPR, the US CCPA and India's DPDP Act, but not UK GDPR. Dograh lists no certifications for its own cloud. Its argument is that self-hosted users do not need it to be SOC 2, HIPAA or GDPR certified, because it never sees their data. Read my guide to AI agents and UK GDPR before recording customer calls.
- Phone provider tokens, such as your Twilio auth token, are stored in Dograh, so keep account access tight.
Using it in the UK
- The homepage lists the UK among the regions it targets. Whether you can get a UK phone number depends on your provider, such as Twilio or Vonage, not on Dograh; the setup guide uses a US Twilio number.
- Prices are in dollars, VAT is not mentioned, and the terms are governed by Indian law with disputes heard in Bengaluru.
- If you self-host, you choose where the data lives, for example a UK cloud region. The cloud service does not say where it stores data.
Other launches from the same team
- None found. The makers' Product Hunt profiles list only this Dograh launch.
Alternatives to Dograh
- Vapi - pick it if you want the hosted platform Dograh compares itself with and do not want to run servers; hosting is $0.05 a minute with $5 of free credit.
- Retell AI - pick it if you want a hosted tool with templates, from $0.07 a minute with $10 of free credit.
- Agentplace - pick it if you are not technical and want an agent that answers questions, books appointments and takes phone calls, with a free plan.
My verdict
| Area | Score |
|---|---|
| Usefulness | 3/5 |
| Getting started | 3/5 |
| Value for money | 5/5 |
| Trust and privacy | 3/5 |
| UK fit | 3/5 |
| Overall | ★★★½☆ 3.5/5 |
If I were a developer building phone agents for clients, I would try Dograh first, because the price and the control are hard to beat. For a non-technical business owner, it is too much setup. I would also want the privacy policy rewritten before putting customer calls through the cloud version.
Frequently asked questions
Is Dograh free?
Yes, if you host it yourself. The open-source version is free forever with no limits, though you still pay your phone provider and AI model providers. The hosted cloud charges a 1¢ (about 0.75p) a minute platform fee, with credits from $5.
What does Dograh do?
It lets you build AI voice agents that answer and make phone calls. Typical jobs are booking appointments, qualifying leads, sending payment reminders and passing callers to a human. You design the conversation in a visual builder and connect a phone provider such as Twilio.
Dograh vs Vapi: which is cheaper?
Dograh, on paper. Self-hosted Dograh has no platform fee at all, and its cloud charges 1¢ a minute. Vapi lists a $0.05 a minute hosting fee, with model costs passed through on top. Vapi is fully hosted, so it asks less of you technically.
