The ChatGPT Plugin Directory is where you now add extra tools to ChatGPT. It replaced the app directory in July 2026, and the old GPT Store is winding down, with custom GPTs due to retire on 11 December 2026. Plugins from Canva, HubSpot, Stripe and Notion are free to install on any ChatGPT plan, including the free one. Paid plans start at £6.99 on the UK App Store. What is ChatGPT Plugin Directory?

The GPT Store opened in January 2024 as a place to find custom versions of ChatGPT, called GPTs. In December 2025 OpenAI added an app directory for apps that connect ChatGPT to other services. On 9 July 2026 it replaced that app directory with the Plugin Directory, at chatgpt.com/plugins.

A plugin bundles skills (saved instructions for a task) with connected apps such as Canva, HubSpot or Stripe. You install it once, and ChatGPT can then use it in your chats. The same plugins work in Codex, OpenAI's coding tool. Anyone can browse the directory without logging in. It is sorted into categories, including Small Business, Finance, Productivity and Travel.

GPTs are on the way out. OpenAI plans to retire custom GPTs on 11 December 2026, when they stop working and leave the GPT directory. Their makers can move them into plugins. If you rely on a GPT from the old store, check whether its maker has moved it.

Who owns ChatGPT Plugin Directory?

  • It is run by OpenAI. The business is OpenAI Group PBC, a public benefit corporation.
  • The non-profit OpenAI Foundation controls OpenAI Group and appoints its board. When the new structure was announced in October 2025, the Foundation held 26% and Microsoft roughly 27%.
  • Sam Altman is chief executive.
  • OpenAI is private. In February 2026 it raised $110 billion in a round that valued it at $730 billion before the new money.
  • The GPT Store opened on 10 January 2024, and the Plugin Directory launched on 9 July 2026.

ChatGPT is one of the most used apps in the world, so the directory has a huge built-in audience.

  • OpenAI said in February 2026 that ChatGPT had 900 million weekly active users and 50 million paying subscribers.
  • Similarweb's public page for chatgpt.com showed 5.9B visits in its September 2026 report, under a "last 3 months" heading, and ranked it sixth in the world. This covers all of ChatGPT, not just the directory.
  • The ChatGPT app was No. 1 in Productivity on the UK App Store on 16 October 2026. On Google Play it shows more than 1 billion downloads.
  • Users had made more than 3 million GPTs by the time the GPT Store opened in January 2024.

Hidden costs

  • Provider accounts. Most plugins connect to a service you pay for separately. The Canva plugin, for example, uses Canva AI credits to generate designs, and its bulk create feature needs a Canva Enterprise plan.
  • Plan limits. OpenAI says using apps can count towards your ChatGPT plan limits and any limits set by the app provider.
  • Credits on business plans. On ChatGPT Business, use beyond what is included comes out of a shared pool of credits. OpenAI says the usage included with Premium seats has no fixed dollar value.
  • Moving old GPTs. Custom actions in GPTs do not move across to plugins. Replacing them may need a custom MCP server and technical help.
  • Currency and VAT. OpenAI's help pages quote US dollars and say prices may vary by country. They do not say whether VAT is included.

Selling your agent on ChatGPT Plugin Directory

  • Who can list: Any developer with an OpenAI platform account. You must complete individual or business verification to publish under your own name or a company name.
  • Approval: You upload your plugin as a ZIP file and fix any problems the automated checks find. Plugins that connect to a server then go to human review. You must supply five test cases where it should work, three where it should refuse, and a video walkthrough.
  • After launch: OpenAI scans connected servers daily. New tools stay hidden until they pass the checks.
  • Commission: None. But plugins may only sell physical goods, through your own checkout. Selling subscriptions, digital content or credits is not allowed, and plugins must not promote upgrades.
  • Payouts: OpenAI does not pay plugin makers. Its 2024 plan to pay US GPT builders based on engagement does not appear in the current plugin documentation.

What's good

  • You can browse the whole directory without an account, and plugins install free on every plan, including Free.
  • Well-known business tools are there, from Canva and HubSpot to Stripe, Notion and Shopify.
  • There is a Small Business category, which makes useful plugins easy to find.
  • Plugins that connect to outside servers pass human review with set test cases, and OpenAI rescans them every day.
  • Listings explain what data is shared with the provider, warn that apps can carry elevated risk, and say you can disconnect at any time.
  • UK App Store prices are shown in pounds.

What's not so good

  • The GPT Store is closing. Custom GPTs retire on 11 December 2026, and their custom actions do not carry over.
  • OpenAI has changed the format twice since 2024, from the GPT Store to an app directory and then to plugins, so guides go out of date quickly.
  • Makers cannot sell digital products or subscriptions, so independent builders have little reason to list.
  • On Free, Go, Plus and Pro, data your apps pull in may be used for training unless you switch the setting off.
  • Listings show no ratings or install numbers.

Who is it for?

It suits UK freelancers and small teams who already use ChatGPT and want it to work with the tools they pay for, such as Canva, HubSpot, Stripe or Notion.

Skip it if you want to sell your own agent for money, or if you need your data to stay in the UK on a personal plan.

  • Availability: ChatGPT and the Plugin Directory work in the UK. OpenAI says plugin availability depends on your plan and region, and some newer features have launched later here. Apps in ChatGPT left out the UK at their October 2025 launch, and Pro's new "dot" agent excluded the UK at its September 2026 launch.

  • Data location: Since 24 October 2025 OpenAI has offered UK data residency for ChatGPT Enterprise, ChatGPT Edu and its API. It does not cover connectors, MCP use or third-party services, so plugin data can leave the UK.
  • UK GDPR: OpenAI's privacy policy says personal data is mainly processed in the US. For UK transfers it relies on adequacy decisions, standard contractual clauses and the UK International Data Transfer Addendum.

Interesting facts about ChatGPT Plugin Directory

  • ChatGPT had plugins once before. OpenAI switched them off in April 2024, and the name came back in July 2026 for something quite different.
  • OpenAI publishes a guide to bringing Claude Code plugins, made for Anthropic's rival tool, into its own directory.
  • When a GPT is moved to a plugin, its instructions become a "skill" and its knowledge files become reference files.
  • OpenAI's own DALL·E GPT was due to retire on 30 August 2026, months before other GPTs.
