Claude Cowork is Anthropic's agent for everyday office work. You point it at folders and apps, give it a job, and it works through the steps and hands back finished files. Since 16 September 2026 it is no longer a separate mode: Anthropic is merging Cowork and chat into one Claude, rolling out to Pro and Max first. It suits people who already pay for Claude. There is no free version: Pro costs £18 a month including VAT in the UK. It was #1 on Product Hunt for the day, week and month. It is capable and well documented, but usage limits and US data handling hold it back. My rating: ★★★½☆ 3.5/5.
Key facts
- What it does: Works through multi-step tasks in folders you choose, connected apps and a built-in browser, then hands back finished work for you to review. It can also run tasks on a schedule.
- Status: Merging into one Claude with chat since 16 September 2026. Rolling out to Pro and Max first; Anthropic says Team and Free "will follow soon", and Enterprise admins can switch on a unified beta.
- Made by: Anthropic PBC (US). For UK users, the data controller is Anthropic Ireland, Limited (Ireland).
- Launched on Product Hunt: 13 January 2026, #1 Product of the Day, #1 Product of the Week and #1 Product of the Month (January 2026)
- Price: Included in paid Claude plans. Pro is £18 a month including VAT in the UK ($20 in the US, about £15). Max starts at $100 a month (about £75).
- Free plan or trial: No. Claude's free plan does not include Cowork.
- Works with: The Claude desktop app on macOS and Windows on every paid plan, plus the web and mobile apps on Pro, Max and Team; connectors such as Microsoft 365 and Slack; plugins; a built-in browser
- Best for: Claude subscribers with repeat file, research and admin jobs
- Our rating: ★★★½☆ 3.5/5

What is Claude Cowork?
Cowork is the agent side of Claude, built for work that is not coding. Instead of chatting, you give Claude a goal. It reads, edits and creates files in the folders you connect, plans the steps and carries the task through. It cannot reach folders you have not connected.

It goes beyond a chatbot because it acts. It can use connectors to your apps, open its own browser for web tasks and, as a last resort, use your screen, asking permission for each app. Scheduled tasks run a saved prompt hourly, daily or weekly, even when your computer is asleep, unless the task needs local files. Anthropic's small business tutorial shows it preparing a Monday cash brief and a month-end reconciliation, with you approving anything before it is sent or paid.
It has changed a lot since launch. In January 2026 it was a research preview for Max subscribers in the macOS app. It is now on all paid plans and on Windows, sessions run in the cloud by default, and since 16 September 2026 Anthropic has been folding it into Claude itself, as the next section explains.
Is Claude Cowork now part of Claude?
Yes. On 16 September 2026 Anthropic announced that "Claude Cowork and chat are merging into one Claude". You no longer pick a mode: Claude decides whether a request needs a quick answer or a full task, and keeps working after you close your laptop. Pro and Max get it first, over several weeks.
Anthropic says "Team and Free plans will follow soon", without saying what Free users will get, and that Enterprise admins "will hear from us at least 30 days before anything changes". On Enterprise it appears as a "Chat and Cowork unified (beta)" setting that admins turn on. Your chats, projects, artifacts, connectors and skills carry over, and for Pro and Max "There's nothing to turn on".
The same announcement added Claude Docs and Claude Slides and brought Claude Design into ordinary conversations. It mentions no price changes. As of 23 October 2026, the Cowork product page and help centre still use the Cowork name, under a banner that reads "Claude Cowork is now just Claude".

How it did on Product Hunt
Cowork finished #1 on Product Hunt for the day, the week and the month.
| Launch | Date | Daily rank | Other awards | Upvotes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Cowork (Claude by Anthropic) | 13 January 2026 | #1 Product of the Day | #1 Product of the Week (week of 12 January 2026); #1 Product of the Month (January 2026); no Golden Kitty | 1,089 |
Upvotes as shown on Product Hunt on 17 October 2026.
The daily, weekly and monthly leaderboards all show 1,089, and the launch page shows no count. Cowork launched under Claude's Product Hunt page, which has 92K followers, so it started with a big audience. The result shows strong interest. It does not tell you how well Cowork works day to day.
What Product Hunt users said
- Cowork has no reviews of its own. It shares Claude's page, which scores 5.0 from 1,049 reviews, and only four of those mention Cowork or file tasks.
- One user says Cowork saves about 10 hours a week running an Instagram page, and likes that it can work with local files.
- Another wants clearer visibility into what the agent did, especially when a step fails.
- One reviewer found the desktop app hard to navigate with many files and switched to VS Code to review changes.
- Across all Claude reviews, the most common complaint is strict usage limits.
Claude Cowork pricing: how much does it cost?
Cowork comes with paid Claude plans rather than as a separate product.

| Plan | Price | What you get |
|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 | Chat, connectors and file creation. No Cowork. Anthropic says the merged Claude comes to Free plans "soon" but not what it will include. |
| Pro | £18 a month including VAT in the UK; $20 a month (about £15), or $17 a month billed annually ($200 up front, about £150) | Cowork, Claude Code, Research and Claude in Chrome |
| Max | From $100 a month (about £75); Max 20x is $200 (about £150) | 5x or 20x Pro usage and early access to new features |
| Team | Standard seat $25 a month or $20 billed annually (about £19 or £15); Premium seat $125 or $100 (about £94 or £75) | Cowork and Claude Code for 2-150 people, central billing and SSO |
| Enterprise | US$20 a seat (about £15) plus usage at API rates, 20-seat minimum | Audit logs, a Compliance API and custom data retention |
UK prices include VAT: Claude's UK pricing page shows Pro at £18 a month or £180 a year and says "Prices include 20% VAT" (checked 23 October 2026). Paying for Pro yearly costs $200 instead of $240. On the UK App Store, Pro is £20 a month and Max 5x is £119.99. Anthropic says Cowork "consumes limits faster than Chat". Anthropic's merge announcement on 16 September 2026 mentions no price changes.
What I like
- It only works in folders you connect, and it always asks before permanently deleting files, in any mode.
- You choose how much freedom it gets: manual approval, automatic approval with safety checks, or none.
- Scheduled tasks keep running while your laptop sleeps, as long as they do not need local files.
- If you already pay for Claude Pro, Cowork costs nothing extra.
- The safety guide is frank about prompt injection and tells you to use a dedicated working folder.
- The privacy policy names UK GDPR and the ICO, and UK data is handled by an Irish Anthropic company.
What I'd want fixed
- There is no free way to try it, and the plans describe usage as "more usage" rather than numbers.
- On consumer plans, Anthropic may train on your chats unless you opt out in settings.
- Local work "is processed on Anthropic's servers rather than staying on your computer", and data goes to the US.
- It keeps changing. Cloud sessions, the "now just Claude" merge and different rules for each plan make the help pages hard to follow.
- One early user reported losing files during testing, so keep backups before you connect a folder.
Who should use it?
Cowork suits a UK small business owner or freelancer who already pays for Claude and has repeat jobs: reports, research, tidying files, a weekly brief. Skip it if you want to try an agent for free, or if your files must stay on your own machine. In that case, look at OpenHuman, a free open-source desktop agent that can run on local models.
Is it safe to use? Privacy and permissions
- It can access the folders you connect, your connected apps, its own browser and, with permission per app, your screen. You can import browser cookies to stay signed in, which widens what it can reach.
- Sessions run in an isolated environment on Anthropic's servers, and data goes to servers in the US. Deleted tasks are removed from Anthropic's back end within 30 days.
- On Pro and Max, your chats may be used for training unless you opt out. Anthropic lists SOC 2, ISO 27001 and ISO 42001 for its commercial products and does not say they cover consumer plans.
- The privacy policy covers UK GDPR and the right to complain to the ICO. My guide to AI agents and UK GDPR explains what to check before you connect work files.
Using it in the UK
- It is available in the UK, and Pro is priced in pounds: £18 a month including VAT on the web, or £20 a month on the App Store.
- Anthropic Ireland, Limited is the data controller for UK users, but data is stored and processed in the US under standard contractual clauses.
- Team and Enterprise owners can turn off web search and stream activity to their own security tools.

| UK fit | 4/5 |

If I already paid for Claude Pro, I would try Cowork on a single, dedicated folder for a weekly report or a file clean-up. I would switch off training in settings first and keep backups. I would not pay for Claude just for Cowork until I had seen how far Pro's limits stretch. Once the merged Claude reaches your account, there is no separate Cowork mode to find: ask for the task in an ordinary conversation.
Frequently asked questions
Is Claude Cowork going away?
No, it is being folded into Claude rather than shut down. Since 16 September 2026, Anthropic has been merging Cowork and chat into one Claude that decides when a request needs a full task. Pro and Max get it first, and Team and Free will follow.
Is Claude Cowork free?
No. Cowork needs a paid Claude plan: Pro, Max, Team or Enterprise. In the UK, Pro costs £18 a month including VAT on the web. Claude's free plan covers chat but not Cowork.
Is Claude Cowork safe?
It works only in folders you connect, asks before deleting files and lets you approve actions one by one. Anthropic warns about prompt injection and says you are responsible for what Claude does for you. Use a dedicated folder, keep backups and turn off training if you do not want your chats used.
Claude Cowork vs Claude Code: what is the difference?
Claude Code is for writing software. Cowork is Anthropic's agent for non-coding work, such as documents, research and admin, across your files and apps. Both come with Claude Pro.
Does Claude Cowork work on Windows?
Yes. Claude Cowork started on Mac and is now in the Claude desktop app on Windows as well, and on the web and mobile apps for Pro, Max and Team. It comes inside the Claude desktop app rather than as a separate download, and you need a paid Claude plan to use it.
