Which AI models can the Mac mini M6 run?

macOS lets the GPU use about two thirds of the memory on Macs with 32 GB or less, so plan around that figure rather than the number on the box.

Memory optionBiggest model at 4-bitExample modelsPublished speed
16 GB (about 10.7 GB for the GPU)14B with a short chat (Qwen3 14B is 8.5 GB)Llama 3.1 8B (4.8 GB), Qwen3 14BNo published figure for the 153 GB/s 16 GB model
24 GB (about 16 GB for the GPU)14B with long chats; 27B (16.4 GB) only after raising the limitQwen3 14B; Qwen3 30B-A3B mixture of experts with the limit raised (about 17 GB in Apple's MLX test)Llama 2 7B, 4-bit (Q4_0), llama.cpp: about 36 tokens a second on an M6 with 170 GB/s memory (llama.cpp Apple silicon thread)
32 GB (about 21 GB for the GPU)27B with long chats; 32B (19.4 GB) with a short chatQwen3.8 27B, 32B models, Qwen3 30B-A3BSame 7B figure; no published figure for 27B or 32B models

A long conversation adds 2-4 GB on top of the model file, so leave that headroom. Mixture-of-experts models such as Qwen3 30B-A3B need memory for all their weights but read only about 3B of them for each word, so they write far faster than a dense model of the same size.

How fast is it?

Few people have published local AI speeds for the M6 yet. The best documented figures come from the llama.cpp project's long-running Apple silicon benchmark thread.

  • Llama 2 7B, 4-bit (Q4_0), llama.cpp: about 36 tokens a second when writing and about 989 tokens a second when reading the prompt. This was an M6 with an 8-core GPU and 170 GB/s memory. The Mac mini's M6 has a 12-core GPU, so prompt reading should be quicker. Writing speed depends mostly on memory bandwidth, which the 24 GB and 32 GB Mac minis share.
  • Llama 2 7B, 8-bit (Q8_0), llama.cpp: about 21 tokens a second on the same machine.
  • Comparison: on the same test the Mac mini with M5 Pro wrote about 66-68 tokens a second, and the 40-core M5 Max in the MacBook Pro about 120.
  • Apple's claim: up to 4.8 times faster prompt processing in LM Studio than the M4 Mac mini. Apple did not name the model or settings.
  • Bigger models: no reputable outlet had published 14B, 27B or 32B figures for the M6 by 17 October 2026. Notebookcheck's review ran no AI tests.

Writing speed falls roughly in line with file size, because the chip reads the whole model for every word it writes. A 27B model at 4-bit is about 16.4 GB, roughly four times the size of the 7B test file, so expect a fraction of the 7B speed.

Which version should you buy?

Buy the 32 GB model with 256 GB of storage at £1,299, built to order from Apple. It costs the same as the standard 24 GB, 512 GB model that shops stock, and the extra 8 GB is what lets a 27B model fit with room to spare. Keep model files on an external SSD rather than paying Apple £200 for 512 GB, unless you want everything on one drive.

Skip the 16 GB model for AI work. It has the slower 153 GB/s memory and only about 10.7 GB for the GPU. Skip the £1,799 32 GB, 1 TB model unless you need the space, because the extra £500 buys storage, not AI ability.

Students and staff pay £799 for the 16 GB model and £1,179 for the 32 GB, 256 GB model in Apple's UK education store. Apple's UK refurbished store listed no Mac mini on 17 October 2026.

Hidden costs

  • Memory you can't add later. Going from 16 GB to 32 GB costs £400 at purchase and can never be done afterwards.
  • Storage. Apple charges £200 for 512 GB and £500 for 1 TB over the 256 GB base. Model files of 5-20 GB each fill a small drive quickly.
  • Screen, keyboard and mouse. None are included. The box holds the Mac mini and a power lead.
  • AppleCare. Optional. AppleCare One costs from £16.99 a month for up to three products. Accidental damage claims carry an excess of £39-£79 for casing damage and £109-£229 for other damage such as liquid.
  • Power. Low. Apple rates maximum continuous power at 155 W, and Notebookcheck saw the CPU settle at about 30 W under sustained load.

Software: Ollama, LM Studio and the rest

Everything you need runs natively on Apple silicon. There are no drivers to install.

  • MLX: Apple's own machine learning framework works on every Apple silicon Mac. Apple says MLX uses the GPU Neural Accelerators on the M5 from macOS 26.2, and the M6 has a Neural Accelerator in each GPU core too.
  • Ollama: runs models through llama.cpp with Metal, and since a March 2026 preview it can also use MLX. That first preview asked for more than 32 GB of memory. Ollama's June 2026 post points to MLX builds such as Gemma 4 12B and does not mention a memory requirement. See our Ollama guide.
  • LM Studio: uses both MLX and llama.cpp, needs macOS 14 or later and recommends 16 GB or more. See our LM Studio guide.
  • llama.cpp: runs on the GPU through Metal.
  • One setup step: to give the GPU more than two thirds of the memory, run sudo sysctl iogpu.wired_limit_mb=24576 in Terminal on a 32 GB model (that sets 24 GB). The setting resets when you restart unless you add it to /etc/sysctl.conf. Leave several gigabytes for macOS.

Noise, power and size

  • Size: 12.7 x 12.7 x 5.0 cm and 0.67 kg. The power supply is built in, so there is just one lead.
  • Power and noise: Apple quotes maximum continuous power of 155 W and a sound level of 5 dBA at idle.
  • Under load: Notebookcheck found the CPU holds about 30 W and the GPU a little under 19 W, and called the machine very quiet unless both are pushed hard at once.

Who makes the Mac mini M6?

  • Apple Inc., based at One Apple Park Way, Cupertino, California. Apple introduced the Macintosh in 1984.
  • UK support comes through Apple Stores, the online store and 0800 048 0408.
  • Apple gives a one-year limited warranty. Under English law you also have up to six years to claim from the seller for faulty goods.

What's good

  • 32 GB for £1,299, enough to hold a 27B model with a long chat.
  • MLX, Ollama, LM Studio and llama.cpp all run natively, with no drivers or BIOS settings.
  • Small and quiet, with a built-in power supply and a 5 dBA idle rating.
  • Easy to buy in the UK, with a 2-year John Lewis guarantee on the 24 GB model and £799 education pricing.
  • Three Thunderbolt 4 ports and 2.5Gb Ethernet as standard, with 10Gb Ethernet as an option.

What's not so good

  • The 32 GB ceiling rules out 70B models. Llama 3.3 70B needs 42.4 GB at 4-bit.
  • Memory bandwidth of 153-170 GB/s gives about half the M5 Pro's writing speed in the llama.cpp test.
  • The 32 GB version is built to order, so only Apple sells it.
  • 256 GB of base storage is small for a collection of model files.
  • Thunderbolt 4 only. Apple ties Thunderbolt 5 clustering for large models to the M5 Pro Mac mini.

Who should buy it?

Buy it if you want a quiet, always-on box for 8B-27B models: a private chat assistant, a coding helper or an agent that runs while you work. It suits first-timers who want Ollama or LM Studio to just work. Skip it if you want 70B models or fast answers from 32B models. The Mac mini with M5 Pro and 64 GB is the next step up.

Buying in the UK

  • Availability: Apple UK, John Lewis and Currys sell the standard models. The 32 GB model is built to order, so only Apple sells it. Prices include 20% VAT and there are no import charges.
  • Warranty: Apple gives one year. John Lewis lists a 2-year guarantee on the 24 GB model; Currys lists the 1-year manufacturer's guarantee.
  • Returns: Apple accepts returns within 14 days of delivery.
  • Buying abroad: a Mac mini sent from outside the UK costs more than £135, so GOV.UK says you pay VAT to the courier before delivery, plus any duty due.

Interesting facts about the Mac mini M6

  • The 16 GB model has slower memory than the others: 153 GB/s against 170 GB/s for 24 GB and 32 GB, according to Apple's own specification page.
  • Notebookcheck describes the M6 as Apple's first 2 nm chip for Macs and measured multi-core CPU performance about 40-50% above the M4.
  • The entry Mac mini price has climbed through 2026. Hoxton Macs reports the entry model moved from £599 to £799 in May, and the M6 model launched at £899 in August.
