Claude usage limits explained: Pro, Max, peak hours and Claude Code

Table of Claude usage limits by plan on 29 October 2026: every plan has a session limit that resets every five hours; Pro gets at least 5x Free per session, Max 5x and Max 20x get 5x and 20x Pro; Pro and Max have weekly limits; Claude Code shares the same pool

Claude usage limits work on two clocks: a session allowance that resets every five hours, and, on paid plans, a weekly cap that resets at a fixed time set for your account. Pro gives at least five times Free's usage per session, and Max gives 5x or 20x Pro's. Chat, Cowork and Claude Code share one pool. Anthropic publishes no message counts, so this guide sticks to what its help centre, pricing page and staff have said, including the weekday peak hours.

Key facts

  • Two limits: a session limit that resets every five hours, plus a weekly limit on Pro and Max.
  • How much you get: Pro is at least 5x Free per session; Max 5x and Max 20x are 5x and 20x Pro. Anthropic publishes no message counts.
  • One shared pool: chat, Cowork tasks and Claude Code count against the same limits.
  • Peak hours: since 26 March 2026, sessions run down faster on weekdays 5am-11am Pacific, usually 1pm-7pm UK time (12pm-6pm until 1 November). Since 6 May 2026 this no longer applies to Claude Code on Pro and Max.
  • Check your usage: Settings > Usage on the web or desktop app; /usage in Claude Code.
  • At the limit: wait for the reset, use a free limit reset if offered, turn on usage credits at API rates, or upgrade.
  • Price (UK, 29 October 2026): Pro £18 a month including 20% VAT; Max from £90. Full prices are in my Claude pricing guide.

How do Claude usage limits work?

Claude usage limits cap how much you can do in a five-hour session and, on paid plans, in a week. Anthropic calls it a "conversation budget" that "determines how many messages you can send to Claude, or how long you can work with Claude Code, before needing to wait for your limit to reset".

Its help article on how usage and length limits work says paid plans have "a session limit that resets every five hours, and weekly limits that reset once every week". It also says that "your usage of all different Claude product surfaces (claude.ai, Claude Code, Claude Desktop) counts towards the same usage limit".

Anthropic help centre article How do usage and length limits work, explaining the five-hour session limit and weekly limits on paid Claude plans
How do usage and length limits work?, support.claude.com, 29 October 2026. Screenshot: aiagents.org.uk

What uses the allowance is the work behind each message. Anthropic lists message length, attachments, conversation length, tools such as Research, the model, the effort level and multi-step tasks.

Usage limits are not length limits. A length limit caps one conversation; the fix is a new chat.

Anthropic also keeps a free hand: the Pro and Max help pages say it "may limit your usage in other ways, such as weekly and monthly caps or model and feature usage, at our discretion."

What are the limits on Free, Pro and Max?

Every plan has a five-hour session limit, and the paid plans add a weekly limit. The plans differ in how big each session is, stated as multiples rather than numbers. This is everything Anthropic's pages say, as of 29 October 2026.

The multiples come from Anthropic's pricing page: "Pro gives you at least 5x more usage per 5-hour session than Free. Max gives you 5x or 20x more usage per 5-hour session than Pro." Anthropic does not say whether the weekly cap scales by the same multiple.

UK prices include 20% VAT and come from Anthropic's pricing page as it shows to UK visitors, checked on 29 October 2026 for my Claude pricing guide, which has the rest. My ChatGPT vs Claude vs Gemini vs Copilot comparison shows how they stack up against rivals.

Two details trip people up. On Pro, Fable models are outside your allowance: Anthropic's Fable help article says they "run on pay-as-you-go usage credits from the start". And the pages disagree on priority access. The Pro help article lists "priority access to Claude during high-traffic periods", but the plan comparison table on the pricing page marks "Priority access at high traffic times" as Max only.

When does the Claude limit reset?

Your session limit resets every five hours, and your weekly limit resets at the same day and time each week. Anthropic says on the Pro and Max pages that the weekly reset time "is assigned to your account" and stays the same "regardless of when you start using Claude or when your subscription begins".

The two limits run at the same time. Every message counts against your current session and your week together. Anthropic's Claude Code documentation warns that "a single burst of heavy activity, such as a large workflow fanout, can exhaust the weekly allowance before the session window resets." So waiting for a new session is no help once the week is gone.

Anthropic does not say exactly when a session starts; its pricing page calls it "a rolling five-hour session window".

A third kind of reset exists. Anthropic occasionally gives eligible plans a limit reset, a "Reset for free" button in Settings > Usage that refills your session or weekly limit at once. The button works only on the web or in Claude Desktop, but the refill applies everywhere, including Claude Code.

What is Claude's peak hours policy?

Since 26 March 2026, five-hour sessions on Free, Pro and Max run down faster on weekdays between 5am and 11am Pacific time, with weekly limits unchanged. Since 6 May 2026, Claude Code on Pro and Max is exempt. Anthropic announced the policy through a staff post on X, not in its help centre.

The statement came from Thariq Shihipar, who then worked on Claude Code at Anthropic, in a post on X on 26 March 2026, also reported by TechRadar. He wrote: "To manage growing demand for Claude we're adjusting our 5 hour session limits for free/Pro/Max subs during peak hours." He added: "Your weekly limits remain unchanged," and "During weekdays between 5am-11am PT / 1pm-7pm GMT, you'll move through your 5-hour session limits faster than before."

In a follow-up post, also quoted by The Register, he said "~7% of users will hit session limits they wouldn't have before, particularly for pro tiers." His advice: "If you run token-intensive background jobs, shifting them to off-peak hours will stretch your session limits further." PCWorld reported the same message from an Anthropic representative on Reddit and said it confirmed with Anthropic that the post was genuine.

In UK time, the Pacific window is 1pm-7pm for most of the year. When US and UK clocks change on different dates it is 12pm-6pm, as it is this week: UK clocks went back on 25 October, and US clocks go back on 1 November 2026. That is my conversion; the post itself said "1pm-7pm GMT" during a similar gap in March, so treat the edges as approximate.

Anthropic has changed it once. On 6 May 2026 its announcement of higher usage limits said: "we're removing the peak hours limit reduction on Claude Code for Pro and Max accounts." It did not mention chat, Cowork or the Free plan.

Is the rest still in force? As of 29 October 2026 I found no later statement from Anthropic ending it for chat or Free. The help centre does not mention peak hours, and Anthropic has not said how much faster sessions run down. If you hit the limit in a UK afternoon while chatting, this is a likely reason.

Does Claude Code use the same limits?

Yes. On Pro and Max, Claude Code draws on the same five-hour and weekly limits as chat. Anthropic's article on using Claude Code with your Pro or Max plan says the limits "are shared across Claude and Claude Code, meaning all activity in both tools counts against the same limits." That includes Claude Code in VS Code, Cursor and JetBrains editors.

That is why developers on Pro hit the limit: Anthropic's Claude Code guide explains that "every previous message is resent on every turn", so a long session uses the allowance far faster than a short chat. The same goes for Cowork: Anthropic says "longer agentic tasks that search the web, run code, or create files generally use more than a quick question."

Anthropic also adjusts Claude Code's allowance on its own. On 6 May 2026 it doubled Claude Code's five-hour limits on Pro and Max. From 14 September 2026 its weekly Claude Code limits sit 25% above the original level, a 17% cut on a temporary summer boost, according to Anthropic posts on X reported by BleepingComputer.

Claude Code adds four quirks, as of 29 October 2026:

  • Wrap-up allowance. If the session limit lands mid-response, Claude Code may finish the step, showing "Usage limit reached · wrapping up". The wrap-up allowance is "small and capped" and, on Pro, applies "up to once per weekly usage period".
  • Automatic continue. Since version 2.1.234, Claude Code can wait and resume a stopped task after the reset, its documentation says.
  • Model-family limits. An "Opus limit" or "Sonnet limit" can be dodged by switching model with /model; the shared session and weekly limits cannot.
  • The API key trap. If an ANTHROPIC_API_KEY environment variable is set, Claude Code uses it "instead of your Claude subscription", and you pay API charges.

My Claude Code guide covers the commands, and the AI coding agents comparison shows how its limits compare with Codex, Copilot and Cursor. If you want to stop counting entirely, Claude Code with Ollama and a local model avoids plan limits, though Anthropic does not support it.

What happens when you hit the limit?

Claude stops until your limit resets, unless usage credits are on. You get warnings first, then a message with the reset time, such as "You've hit your session limit · resets 3:45pm" in Claude Code.

Anthropic's options are to wait, upgrade, use usage credits or, for Claude Code, a pay-as-you-go Console account. In the order I would try them on Pro:

  1. Check the reset time. Settings > Usage shows when each limit resets. Under an hour? Wait.
  2. Use a free limit reset if one is showing. The "Reset for free" button appears on the limit message when you have one.
  3. Plan the next session on a lighter model. Sonnet and Haiku use less than Opus, so the allowance lasts longer.
  4. Turn on usage credits, with a cap. Usage credits let Pro and Max keep working at standard API rates once a limit is used up. Set a monthly spend limit first. Prepaid usage bundles cost up to 30% less. If you subscribed through the iPhone or Android app, you must switch credits on in Claude on the web.
  5. Upgrade only if it keeps happening. Anthropic suggests Max 5x "if you consistently hit limits". See the upgrade section below.
Card listing six steps when you hit your Claude usage limit: check the reset time, use a free limit reset, switch to a lighter model, wait or move heavy jobs off-peak, turn on usage credits with a cap, upgrade only if it keeps happening

One thing will not help: Max's monthly API credits. Anthropic says the $100 or $200 of API credits included with Max "can't be used in Claude Code or the Claude apps, including for usage credits".

How do I check my Claude usage?

On Pro or Max, go to Settings > Usage on claude.ai or in Claude Desktop. In Claude Code, type /usage. Both show how much of your current five-hour session and your weekly limits you have used, and when each resets.

Anthropic's usage limit best practices article says "Current session" shows usage "plus the amount of time remaining in the session", and "Weekly limits" shows when the week resets.

In Claude Code, /usage also shows what is using your limits, such as skills, plugins and MCP servers, with suggested fixes, says Anthropic's cost documentation.

How can I make my Claude limits last longer?

Keep conversations short, put repeated documents in a project, and use the lightest model and effort level that does the job. All of these come from Anthropic's own help pages, and most cost nothing.

  1. Start a new chat for each new topic. Every message resends the conversation so far. In Claude Code, run /clear between tasks; Anthropic calls it "the single most effective lever for both quality and cost".
  2. Put documents you reuse in a project. Anthropic says project content is cached, and "cached portions count less against your limits than new content". Caches expire after a period of inactivity.
  3. Pick the right model. Anthropic says Opus "uses meaningfully more of your quota" and recommends Sonnet for most work and Haiku for quick jobs.
  4. Lower the effort and turn off extras. Turn off extended thinking, use a lower effort level for routine tasks, and switch off connectors and web search you do not need. Anthropic calls tools and connectors "token-intensive".
  5. Batch your questions. Send related questions in one message.
  6. Move heavy jobs out of peak hours. Long chat, Cowork and Research jobs go further before 1pm or after 7pm UK time on weekdays (12pm and 6pm until 1 November), or at weekends. Claude Code on Pro and Max is no longer affected.

If you use Cowork for scheduled office jobs, avoid scheduling them for weekday afternoons UK time.

Should a UK Pro subscriber upgrade to Max?

Probably not straight away. Max 5x costs £90 a month against £18 for Pro, five times the price for five times the per-session allowance, as of 29 October 2026. Try the free fixes for two weeks first.

  • You hit the session limit some afternoons but rarely the weekly one: in chat, it is likely peak hours or long conversations. Change your habits and move heavy work to the morning.
  • You hit a limit once or twice a month: in my view, usage credits with a monthly cap are the cheaper fix than paying £72 a month more for Max 5x.
  • You hit the weekly limit most weeks, mostly through Claude Code: Max 5x is the step Anthropic recommends, and it adds Fable models within your allowance.

Max is billed monthly only. If you move up from a yearly Pro plan, Anthropic credits the unused balance when it is more than the Max price and the billing address matches. If you pay through the App Store, prices are higher than on the web; see the Claude pricing guide for the UK figures.

Frequently asked questions

How long is the Claude usage limit reset?

The session limit resets every five hours on every plan, including Free. Pro and Max also have a weekly limit that resets at a fixed day and time assigned to your account, which stays the same whenever you start using Claude. Settings > Usage shows the time left in your session and your next weekly reset.

What is Claude's peak hours policy?

Since 26 March 2026, five-hour sessions on Free, Pro and Max run down faster on weekdays between 5am and 11am Pacific time, usually 1pm-7pm in the UK. Weekly limits did not change. Since 6 May 2026, Claude Code on Pro and Max is exempt. An Anthropic staff post on X announced it; the help centre does not mention it.

How many messages do you get on Claude Pro?

Anthropic does not publish a number. It says Pro gives at least five times the Free plan's usage per five-hour session, and that the real count depends on message length, file size, conversation length, the model, the effort level and the tools you use. Long chats with attachments use the allowance fastest.

Does Claude Code count towards my Claude usage limit?

Yes. Anthropic says chat on the web, desktop and mobile, Cowork tasks and Claude Code all draw on the same five-hour and weekly limits on Pro and Max. A long coding session can leave little for chat. The exception is Claude Code signed in with an API key, which is billed per token instead.

How do I check my Claude usage?

On a Pro or Max plan, open Settings > Usage on the web or in Claude Desktop. It shows progress bars for the current five-hour session and your weekly limits, with reset times. In Claude Code, type /usage to see your plan limits and what is using them. On Free, Claude tells you when you reach the limit.

Is it worth upgrading from Claude Pro to Max?

Only if you hit the limit most weeks after trying the free fixes. Max 5x gives five times Pro's per-session allowance for £90 a month in the UK, against £18 for Pro. If you hit the limit only now and then, usage credits with a monthly spend cap usually cost less.
