How much does Claude cost in the UK?

Claude costs £0 on the Free plan and £18 a month on Pro, the plan most people buy. Anthropic shows UK visitors prices in pounds for every personal and Team plan, and only Enterprise and the API stay in US dollars.

Here is the full price list Anthropic showed UK visitors on 29 October 2026. Yearly figures are per month, paid up front.

Anthropic gives no message count for any plan. Limits reset on a rolling five-hour window, paid plans add a weekly limit, and chats and Claude Code share one pool. My guide to Claude usage limits explains how those windows work and what to do when you hit one.

Do Claude's UK prices include VAT?

Yes, for the pound prices. Under the Individual, Developer, and Team and Enterprise plan cards, the UK version of Claude's pricing page says "Prices include 20% VAT". So £18 for Pro is £15 plus £3 VAT.

Anthropic's other pages word tax differently. The US version of the pricing page says "Prices shown don't include applicable tax". The help article on the Pro plan gives the US price of $20 and says "some regions include applicable taxes in the displayed price while others add tax at checkout". The help article on Team gives US dollar prices and says they "exclude applicable taxes". None contradicts the UK page. An older help article quoting a UK Pro price "plus applicable tax" no longer exists. Check the total at checkout.

The same "Prices include 20% VAT" line also sits under the US dollar prices on the UK page, for Enterprise seats and the API. Anthropic does not say how VAT applies to those, and its API billing article says credit purchases are charged "plus applicable taxes".

A VAT-registered business can add its VAT number to a paid Claude account, as Anthropic's help centre explains. Your billing address decides how tax is worked out.

What do Claude Free, Pro and Max include?

Free gives you Claude chat with the Sonnet and Haiku models. Pro adds Anthropic's Opus models, Research and Claude Code. Max is Pro with five or twenty times the usage and some API credit on top.

Claude pricing page, Individual tab, as shown to a UK visitor: Free £0, and Pro £15 a month with the annual discount (£180 billed up front) or £18 if billed monthly, marked Claude Code included

  • Free, £0: chat on web, desktop and mobile; web search; file creation and running code; memory; connectors to your apps; Artifacts; Claude Design, Slides and Docs; up to five Projects. No Opus, no Research and no Claude Code.
  • Pro, £18: everything in Free plus more usage, the Opus models, Research, unlimited Projects, Claude Code, Claude Science, Claude Dashboards (beta), Claude in Chrome, and Claude for Microsoft 365 and Outlook. Pro also lets you "hand off and schedule tasks", which is the Cowork side of Claude; my Claude Cowork review covers what that does.
  • Max 5x, £90, and Max 20x, £180: everything in Pro, with 5x or 20x Pro's usage per session, higher output limits, early access to new features, priority access when Claude is busy, and $100 or $200 a month of API credits for building on the Claude Platform. Those credits are for your own apps: Anthropic says they "can't be used in Claude Code or the Claude apps".

The Individual tab shows Max only as "From £90". The Developer tab of the same UK page lists the two tiers separately: Max 5x at £90 and Max 20x at £180 a month, above the "Prices include 20% VAT" line.

The top model divides the plans. Anthropic's table lists Fable as "No" on Free, "Usage credits" on Pro and "50% of weekly limits" on Max: Pro users pay extra for Fable, while Max users can spend up to half their weekly allowance on it.

On every personal plan, Anthropic may train on your chats unless you opt out. Claude skills, connectors and desktop extensions work on every plan, including Free.

Is it cheaper to pay for Claude yearly?

Only on Pro and Team, and yes: Pro paid yearly is £180, against £216 for twelve monthly payments, a saving of £36. Max has no yearly option; Anthropic bills it monthly only.

On Team, a Standard seat paid yearly is £18 a month instead of £22.50, and a Premium seat £90 instead of £113.

Where you pay matters too. On the UK App Store on 29 October 2026, Pro was £20 a month or £199.99 a year, Max 5x £119.99 and Max 20x £249.99. Subscribing on claude.com saves £2 a month on Pro and £69.99 a month on Max 20x.

What do Claude Team and Enterprise cost per seat?

Team costs £18 to £22.50 a seat for a Standard seat and £90 to £113 for a Premium seat, for 2 to 150 people. Enterprise costs US$20 (about £15) a seat a month, billed yearly, plus every token your team uses at API rates.

Claude pricing page, Team and Enterprise tab, as shown to a UK visitor: Team for 2 to 150, Standard seat £18 a month billed annually or £22.50 monthly, Premium seat £90 or £113, Enterprise US$20 a seat a month billed annually with a 20 seat minimum plus usage at API rates

A Standard seat gets "more usage than Pro" and a Premium seat five times that. You can mix seat types, so one heavy coder can have Premium.

Team includes Claude Code and Cowork, Claude Motion (beta), enterprise search, central billing, single sign-on and up to $500 a month of pooled API credits. The line that matters most for a UK business is this one: "No model training on your content by default". On personal plans, you have to opt out yourself.

Enterprise adds per-user spend limits, SCIM, audit logs, custom data retention and IP allowlisting. The seat fee buys access, and usage is billed on top, so budget for usage, not only seats. Anthropic labels the seat price in US dollars even on its UK page, under the same "Prices include 20% VAT" note, so ask its sales team to confirm the sterling and VAT position in writing.

Claude Code pricing: is Claude Code free?

No. Claude Code is not on the Free plan. The cheapest way to get it is Claude Pro at £18 a month, and the other way is to pay per token through an Anthropic Console (API) account. My guide to installing Claude Code shows how to sign in with either.

Anthropic's pricing page says "Claude Code is included in all paid plans" and that it "shares the same usage limits as the rest of your plan". So a long coding session eats into the same allowance as your chats. The two ways to pay:

  • On a subscription (Pro, Max, Team, Enterprise): a fixed monthly price and no surprise bills. When you hit the limit, you wait for the reset, move up a plan, or turn on usage credits, which Anthropic charges "at standard API rates".
  • On the API: no limits beyond rate limits, and you pay for every token. Anthropic's Claude Code documentation says enterprise deployments average about $13 (about £10) per developer per active day and $150-250 (about £113-£188) per developer per month, with 90% of users below $30 (about £22.50) per active day.

For one person who codes most days, Pro at £18 or Max 5x at £90 is usually cheaper than those API averages. The API suits occasional use, automated jobs, or a company that wants per-developer spend limits.

My Claude Code guide covers installing it on a Mac or Windows PC, and AI coding agents compared sets its price against Codex, Copilot and Cursor. To avoid paying Anthropic, Claude Code can run on a local model through Ollama, at lower quality.

Claude API pricing per million tokens

The Claude API charges per million tokens, in US dollars, with output costing five times input on every model. As of 29 October 2026, prices run from $0.10 (about 7.5p) per million input tokens on Haiku 5.5 to $50 (about £37.50) per million output tokens on Fable 5.1.

ModelInput, per million tokensOutput, per million tokensAnthropic's description

Table of Claude API prices per million tokens on 29 October 2026: Fable 5.1 $10 input and $50 output, Opus 5.5 $4 and $20, Sonnet 5.5 $2 and $10, Haiku 5.5 $0.10 and $0.50, with pound conversions
Claude API list prices from claude.com/pricing, 29 October 2026, converted at $1 = £0.75.

Batch processing saves 50%. US-only inference, for work that must stay in the US, costs 1.1x. Fast mode on Opus 5.5 costs twice the standard price.

Per million tokens, reading from the cache costs $0.25 on Fable 5.1, $0.20 on Opus 5.5, $0.10 on Sonnet 5.5 and $0.01 on Haiku 5.5 (prompts up to 100K tokens). Writing to the cache costs $12.50, $5, $2.50 and $0.125. Older models, such as Opus 5 at $5 and $25, stay on sale under "Legacy models".

Claude vs ChatGPT and Gemini prices in the UK

Claude Pro is the cheapest of the three main £18-£20 plans, but Claude has no budget tier. ChatGPT Go at £7 and Google AI Plus at £4.49 undercut it if you only need more chat.

The ChatGPT and Google prices and features are as their UK pricing pages showed them on 29 October 2026; my ChatGPT vs Claude vs Gemini vs Copilot comparison goes through the rest. Anthropic's UK page states that its prices include VAT; OpenAI's UK pricing page did not mention VAT when I checked. For every other AI subscription, see my UK AI price tracker.

Are there student, education or nonprofit discounts?

There is no student discount on Claude Pro for individuals: Anthropic's help centre says it does not offer "standard discounted pricing for individual plans". Its discounts go through organisations: universities can buy an Education plan, and nonprofits can get up to 75% off Team and Enterprise.

  • Nonprofits: Anthropic announced on 2 December 2025 that nonprofits can get "a discount of up to 75% on Team and Enterprise plans". Its nonprofits page lists a Team seat at $8 (about £6) a user a month, in US dollars even on the UK view, open to US 501(c)(3) charities "and their international equivalents". Teams of up to 150 seats verify through Goodstack.
  • Universities: the Education plan is "a comprehensive university-wide plan" for students, faculty and staff, at "discounted rates". It is bought by the institution, and Anthropic publishes no price. If you are a student, ask your university whether it has one.
  • Researchers: Anthropic's education page says scientists at academic and nonprofit research institutions "can now get Claude at no cost to start".

Which Claude plan should you buy?

Most UK freelancers and sole traders should start on Free, then buy Pro at £18 a month once they hit the limit every week. Move to Max only when Pro's limits cost you working time, and to Team once a second person needs Claude for work.

Decision card: Free for trying Claude, Pro at £18 a month for daily solo work, Max 5x at £90 when you hit Pro limits weekly, Max 20x at £180 for all-day Claude Code, Team Standard at £18 to £22.50 a seat for two or more people, API for apps and scripts, Enterprise for 20 or more seats
Pick a Claude plan by how you work. UK prices including VAT from claude.com/pricing, 29 October 2026.
  1. You want to try it, or ask a few questions a week: Free, £0.
  2. You write, research or code most days on your own: Pro, £18 a month. Switch to £180 a year after a month or two if it sticks.
  3. You hit Pro's limits every week and lose working time: Max 5x, £90 a month.
  4. You run Claude Code or long agent tasks all day: Max 20x, £180 a month.
  5. Two or more people use Claude for client work: Team Standard, £18-£22.50 a seat. You get central billing, single sign-on and no training on your content by default. See AI agents and UK GDPR.
  6. You are building an app, or run Claude from scripts now and then: the API. Start on Haiku or Sonnet and set a spend limit in the Console.
  7. You have 20 or more staff and need SSO, SCIM and audit logs: Enterprise. Budget for usage on top of the US$20 seat fee.

Whichever you choose, subscribe on claude.com, not in the iPhone app, and switch off model training before you paste in client work.

How do you cancel Claude or get a refund?

Cancel on the web or desktop app under Settings, then Billing, then Cancel. You keep paid access until the end of the billing period, and UK buyers can ask for a prorated refund within 14 days of purchase.

  1. Cancel in time. Anthropic says to cancel "at least 24 hours before your next billing date" to avoid the next charge. The cancellation "will take effect at the end of your current billing period".
  2. If you subscribed in the iPhone or Android app, cancel there: in the Claude app, tap your initials, then Billing, then Manage subscription. Apple and Google bill those subscriptions, not Anthropic.
  3. To ask for a refund in the UK, look in Settings. Anthropic says that "In the European Economic Area and the United Kingdom, you may receive a refund within 14 days of purchase", prorated by use, and that you may find the option in Settings. Otherwise payments are non-refundable except where its terms or the law say so.
  4. For App Store purchases, only Apple can refund, through reportaproblem.apple.com. A refund there does not cancel the subscription, so cancel separately.

The monthly API credits on Max and Team cannot be refunded. They stop when you cancel, and any you already have stay usable until they expire.
