A personal AI assistant is software that handles your own admin, such as email, diary, research, notes and reminders, and the newest ones act for you as AI agents. Any AI personal assistant works the same in London, Edinburgh or anywhere else in the UK; what matters is whether the company sells here, and as of 23 October 2026 ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Copilot and Grok Bot do, while Claude Duet and Meta Muse don't. The main paid plans cost £18 to £20 a month in the UK, the big four all have free tiers, and an assistant running on your own Mac costs nothing. This guide covers what an assistant can do today, which one fits which person, what each costs, how to set one up in an afternoon, how to do it without handing your whole life to a vendor, and what to check if you would rather hire a person who uses AI.
Key facts
- What it does: drafts and sorts email, manages the diary, researches, summarises, reminds; the better ones act as well as answer.
- Cost (UK, 23 October 2026): Claude Pro £18, Google AI Pro and Microsoft 365 Premium £18.99, ChatGPT Plus £20 a month; on-device £0.
- New always-on agents in the UK: Grok Bot is sold here; ChatGPT Dots only on business seats; Claude Duet and Meta Muse not yet.
- Pick by where your life already is: Gmail users to Google, Outlook users to Microsoft, writers and researchers to Claude, everyone else to ChatGPT.
- Privacy: cloud assistants send your data to the vendor; an on-device assistant on a Mac keeps it local and works offline.
- First job: a daily inbox summary with drafts you approve. Expand after 30 days.

Prices change often, so treat the table as a starting point. The details behind each row, including setup and safety, are in my guides to Claude Duet, Meta Muse, ChatGPT Dots and Grok Bot, and in the reviews linked above. For more new agents, see the best new AI agents on Product Hunt.
Which personal AI assistant should you pick?
Pick a personal AI assistant by the job you want done, not by the brand. As of 23 October 2026, my UK picks are Claude Cowork if you already pay for Claude, Upstream for a Gmail inbox, Hey Noah for a busy diary, Grok Bot for a hosted agent and OpenHuman if your data must stay at home.
You already pay for Claude
Point it at one folder and a weekly job, such as a report. Scheduled tasks keep running while your laptop sleeps, as long as they don't need local files.
Your inbox is Gmail
Sorts your inbox, drafts replies in your voice and brings quiet threads back with a follow-up. It doesn't work with Outlook.
Your diary is packed
Text it to book, move and chase meetings on Google Calendar. On Outlook, look at Bond instead.
You want an always-on agent now
Named Bots that keep working in the cloud while you are away, sold to UK users today. Keep purchases behind an "Ask first" rule. If your firm pays for ChatGPT Business, a dot is the alternative.
Your data must stay at home
A free, open-source desktop assistant that can run on local models, so nothing leaves your computer. OpenClaw suits more technical users.
Not in the UK yet
Claude Duet and Meta Muse
Duet is a US-only waitlist and Muse runs in the US, Canada and Japan. Both check where you are, and getting round that with a VPN isn't worth the risk to your real accounts.
Do you need an AI personal assistant in London, Edinburgh or near you?
No. An AI personal assistant is an app, so ChatGPT, Claude, Grok Bot and the rest work the same in London, Edinburgh, Belfast or a village in Devon. As of 23 October 2026, what changes an assistant for UK users is the country, not the city: availability, pounds and VAT, where data is stored, and support.
So "near me" is the wrong filter for software. Four things do depend on where you are, and each is about the UK as a whole:
- Availability. Companies switch products on country by country. Anthropic's help centre says Claude Duet needs "A Claude account in the US", Meta says you must be in a country where Muse is available, and OpenAI keeps dots off personal Pro plans in the UK.
- Price and VAT. Claude, ChatGPT, Google and Microsoft show UK visitors prices in pounds. Most smaller assistants charge in dollars, so what you pay depends on the exchange rate, and they rarely say whether VAT is added.
- Where your data goes. Most assistants process UK users' data in the US, whichever city you live in. If that matters, pick one that runs on your own computer (see privacy for UK users).
- Support and terms. You deal with the company online wherever you are, and some put disputes under US law: Bond and Hey Noah both use arbitration in Delaware.
When I searched "ai personal assistant Edinburgh" from the UK on 23 October 2026, most results were virtual assistant agencies and PA job adverts, not apps. If a person who uses AI well is what you are after, the next section explains what to check.
Want a human assistant who uses AI? What to look for
If you want a person, look for a virtual assistant (VA) or PA who can tell you exactly which AI tools will touch your data, on which plan, and who signs a written data contract. That matters more than their postcode: a remote VA in Inverness can run a London diary as well as someone down the road.
People are still hired for this work, even by AI companies. City AM reported on 12 October 2026 that Anthropic, which makes Claude, was offering £145,000 for an administrative business partner in London. A good human assistant uses AI for the routine and keeps the judgement. Before you hire one, check six things:
- Which AI tools they use, and on which plan. Business plans are safer for client data: OpenAI says content on ChatGPT Business and Enterprise isn't used for training by default, while Anthropic may train on consumer Claude chats unless the user opts out.
- A written contract. If they handle personal data for your business, they act as your processor under UK GDPR, and the ICO lists the terms the contract must cover, including confidentiality, security and what happens to the data when the work ends.
- Named AI services. The ICO says a processor shouldn't bring in another processor without the controller's prior written authorisation. In practice, ask your VA to list the AI services that will see your data, and approve them in writing.
- The ICO register. Organisations and sole traders that use personal information must pay the ICO a data protection fee unless they are exempt, and the register of fee payers is public.
- No shared passwords. Give them delegated access or their own login, so you can remove it in one step when the work ends.
- Approval rules. Use the same rules you would give an AI agent: nothing sent to a new contact, paid or deleted without your say-so, at least for the first month.
If the work involves client, patient or legal data, read AI agents and UK GDPR before anyone, human or AI, gets access.
What does a personal AI assistant actually do?
Two years ago an "AI assistant" meant a chat box. Today the term covers a range, from a chat box with your files attached to a system that reads your inbox overnight, drafts replies, moves meetings and flags what needs you. The difference is autonomy: how much the assistant does between your instructions. We explain the full spectrum in What is an AI agent?; for this page the practical question is which jobs you can hand over now.
| Job | What a good assistant does | Autonomy needed | Ready today? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Summarises the inbox, drafts replies in your tone, files and flags | Reads everything, sends only with approval | Yes | |
| Diary | Finds slots, sends invites, prepares a brief before each meeting | Reads calendar and email; writes with approval | Yes |
| Research | Searches many sources, cross-checks, writes a cited summary | Reads the web; nothing to approve | Yes, the most mature use |
| Notes and documents | Turns meeting notes into actions; summarises long PDFs | Reads your files | Yes |
| Reminders and follow-ups | Chases what is due, nudges you, chases others | Sends on a schedule with approval | Yes, with care |
| Shopping and booking | Compares prices, fills forms, books | Acts on websites with your card | Early; keep a human on payment |
What should you use a personal AI assistant for first?
Start with one job that repeats every day, follows rules you could write down, and costs little if it goes wrong. For most people that is the morning inbox: a summary of what came in overnight, grouped by what needs a reply, what needs a decision and what can wait, with draft replies you approve or edit. It saves twenty minutes a day, it is easy to check, and it teaches you how the assistant thinks before you trust it with anything else.

What not to start with: anything that sends money, anything that deletes, and anything that speaks for you to people who matter. Those come later, if ever, and always with an approval step.
Which personal AI assistants are available in the UK?
Four cloud assistants dominate, and the sensible choice depends less on benchmarks than on where your email and files already live. A fifth option, running the assistant on your own device, suits anyone handling client or personal data.
| Assistant | Best for | Strengths | Trade-offs |
|---|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT (Plus) | General use, beginners, voice and images | Broadest feature set; agent mode for multi-step tasks; largest community | Weakest native tie to your email and calendar unless you connect them |
| Claude (Pro) | Writing, long documents, analysis | Follows briefs closely; strong on long files; projects and memory | No image generation; usage caps on the Pro tier |
| Google AI Pro (Gemini) | Gmail, Docs, Drive, Android users | Lives inside Gmail and Docs; large storage bundle | Trails the other two on writing quality in most comparisons |
| Microsoft 365 Premium (Copilot) | Outlook, Word, Excel, Teams users | AI inside the Office apps you already use | Needs a Microsoft 365 subscription; Copilot Pro was folded into Premium in 2026 |
| On-device (Ollama, LM Studio, Jan, Msty) | Privacy, offline use, no subscription | Nothing leaves your Mac; no monthly fee; works on a train | Smaller models; some setup; needs 16 GB RAM or more |
Independent reviews of each, with the current UK price and what the free tier actually includes, are in the Tools and platforms hub.
What about personal AI agents like Meta Muse and ChatGPT Dots?
Since September 2026 a new kind of assistant has taken the headlines: the always-on personal agent. Instead of waiting for you to type, it runs on its own cloud computer, keeps working while your laptop is shut, and messages you when something needs a decision. Meta's Muse, OpenAI's Dots, Instinct, Grok Bot, Google's Gemini Spark and, since 21 October 2026, Anthropic's Claude Duet all work this way.
For UK readers the catch is availability. As of 23 October 2026, most of them are not sold to personal users here. Anthropic's Claude Duet help article asks for a Claude account in the US, Meta says Muse is available in the US and Canada and launched it in Japan on 23 October, OpenAI's dots documentation excludes the UK from personal Pro plans, and Google's help page excludes the UK from Spark.
| Agent | Made by | Price | Available to UK personal users? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Meta Muse | Meta | Free with a usage limit; $20 or $100 a month (about £15 or £75) | No. US, Canada and Japan only |
| Claude Duet | Anthropic | Included in Claude Pro ($20, about £15) and Max in the US during the preview | No. US-only waitlist since 21 October 2026 |
| ChatGPT Dots | OpenAI | Included with a ChatGPT Business Premium seat: £75 a month billed yearly, two-seat minimum | Business plans only. Not on personal Pro plans |
| Instinct | Instinct | Free while invite-only | Waitlist only. No country list published |
| Grok Bot | SpaceXSI (formerly xAI) | From $30 a month (about £23) in the X Subscription | Available in the UK, but tagging @bot on X isn't yet |
| Gemini Spark (now Task in the Gemini app) | Google AI Pro or Ultra | No. The UK is excluded | |
| OpenClaw or Hermes Agent | Open-source projects | Free; you pay for the AI model and any hosting | Yes. You run it yourself |
If you want one now and you live in the UK, the realistic routes are Grok Bot, sold here from $30 a month (about £23) plus VAT, a self-hosted agent such as OpenClaw or Hermes Agent, which can run with a free local model on a Mac, or ChatGPT Dots through a Business workspace if your business already pays for ChatGPT. Whichever you pick, give it the narrowest access that does the job, because these agents act with your real accounts.
How much does a personal AI assistant cost in the UK?

As of 23 October 2026, the main paid tiers cost £18 to £20 a month in the UK: Claude Pro £18 including VAT, Google AI Pro and Microsoft 365 Premium £18.99, and ChatGPT Plus £20. Specialist assistants such as Bond and Hey Noah cost about £37 a month, while Acti Pro is £9.99. Each vendor also sells a much higher tier, from roughly £80 to £200 a month, for heavy users; almost nobody needs it for personal admin. The free tiers are usable for occasional questions but cap the number of messages and often lack the file and email connections that make an assistant an assistant. Check each vendor's UK pricing page before you buy; these figures move.
Is there a free personal AI assistant?
Yes. As of 23 October 2026, ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini all have free plans in the UK, Upstream drafts seven email replies a week for free, Acti's keyboard is free, and OpenHuman and OpenClaw are free, open-source assistants that can run on your own Mac with a local model.
- ChatGPT Free: unlimited text chats with GPT-6, subject to abuse guardrails, with limits on uploads, images, voice, deep research and ChatGPT Work on desktop, according to OpenAI's UK pricing page.
- Claude Free: chat on web, desktop and mobile, web search, file creation, memory and connected apps. Handing off and scheduling tasks, the Cowork side of Claude, needs Pro.
- Gemini: the Gemini app is free; Google AI Plus (£7.99 a month) and Google AI Pro (£18.99) raise the limits.
- Upstream Core: free for up to five team seats, with 7 AI drafts and 3 smart follow-ups a week in Gmail.
- Acti: the keyboard is free; Acti Pro is £9.99 a month on the UK App Store.
- Happycapy: 250 credits a month on the free plan, enough to try a cloud agent on small tasks.
- Bond: 10,000 free credits to try it; Bond doesn't say whether they renew.
- OpenHuman and OpenClaw: free software. Run either with a local model through Ollama or LM Studio and there is no model bill; OpenHuman says nothing then leaves your computer.
Not free: Claude Cowork needs a paid Claude plan, ChatGPT Dots need a Business Premium or Enterprise seat, and Grok Bot has no free plan. Hey Noah offers a 30-day trial rather than a free plan. Meta Muse is free, but not in the UK.
Cloud or on your own device?
Every cloud assistant works the same way: your email, files and instructions go to the vendor's servers, where the model runs. That is fine for most people and gives you the strongest models. It is not fine for everyone. If you handle client data, health data or anything under a confidentiality obligation, the vendor becomes a processor of that data, and you need to read the data-use terms, switch off training on your content where the option exists, and think about whether your clients would expect it.

The alternative is an assistant that runs on your own machine. On a Mac with Apple Silicon and 16 GB or more of memory, a local model can read your email, summarise documents and draft replies with nothing leaving the device, at no monthly cost, and with no internet connection needed. The trade-off is model size: local models are a step behind the cloud flagships on hard reasoning, though more than good enough for admin. Many people run both: a cloud assistant for general questions, a local one for anything with a name in it. Setup is in Run AI agents on your own Mac.
Is a personal AI assistant safe for UK users? Privacy and UK GDPR
Most personal AI assistants send your email and files to servers in the United States, wherever in the UK you sign up. As of 23 October 2026, Claude and ChatGPT explain how they handle UK data and how to complain to the ICO, several smaller assistants don't mention UK GDPR at all, and only on-device assistants keep data at home.
| Assistant | Where your data goes | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Claude, including Cowork | Servers in the US; Anthropic Ireland is the data controller for UK users | Consumer chats may be used for training unless you opt out in settings; you can complain to the ICO |
| ChatGPT, including Dots | OpenAI OpCo, LLC in the US is the controller for UK users | Training is a setting on personal plans; Business and Enterprise data isn't used for training by default |
| Grok Bot | Cloud computers in the US | Training follows Cursor's Privacy Mode; the ICO's investigation into Grok is still open |
| Bond | AWS and Google Cloud in the US | Says it never trains on your data; its policy covers GDPR rights for UK users |
| Hey Noah | Google Cloud in the US | Records and transcribes its calls; the privacy policy doesn't mention UK GDPR |
| Upstream | Wherever its providers are; drafts come from Claude and ChatGPT models | Says it never trains on your data; the policy gives no data location |
| Acti | No location given | Says it keeps no remote log of ordinary keystrokes; the policy doesn't mention UK GDPR |
| Happycapy | Transferred to the US | No UK GDPR mention; its own terms say not to upload health data or ID numbers |
| OpenHuman with a local model | Your own computer | Memory stays local; voice transcription still uses a hosted service |
Three habits matter more than the brand you choose. Switch off model training on personal plans before you connect anything. Connect one account at a time, read-only where you can. And keep client or patient data on a business plan or on your own machine; my private AI guide covers the on-device route.
The regulator is watching too. On 8 October 2026 the ICO opened a six-week call for evidence on agentic AI, closing on 20 November 2026, and said it had made enquiries with OpenAI, Anthropic and Meta. If you use an assistant for business, read AI agents and UK GDPR.
Set it up in an afternoon
- Pick the assistant by where your life is (table above). Do not pick by benchmark; pick by which inbox it can see.
- Connect read access only. Email and calendar, read. Leave sending, deleting and payments disconnected for now.
- Switch off training on your content in the vendor's privacy settings, and read what the terms say about your data. Takes five minutes.
- Give it one standing instruction: every morning, summarise overnight email in three groups: needs a reply, needs a decision, can wait. Draft replies for the first group.
- Teach it your tone by pasting five emails you were happy with and saying "write like this".
- Review every draft for 30 days. Note what it gets wrong. Only then connect send, with "ask before sending to anyone new".
- Add the diary once email is reliable, then meeting briefs, then research. One job at a time.
What should you watch for?
- Over-reliance. An assistant that drafts every reply flattens your voice and hides what you have stopped reading. Keep reading the important threads yourself.
- Cost creep. Four subscriptions at about £19 are about £76 a month. One good one is enough.
- Manipulation. An assistant that reads your inbox can be instructed by an email written to instruct it. Keep sending and payment as approval steps; this is why.
- Data you did not mean to share. A connected drive is a connected drive. Connect folders, not everything.
- Accuracy. Summaries miss things and research invents things. Treat the assistant as a fast junior whose work you check, because that is what it is.
Frequently asked questions
Is there an AI personal assistant near me in London or Edinburgh?
You don't need a local one, because AI personal assistants are apps that work anywhere in the UK. What depends on location is the country: availability, prices in pounds and where your data is stored. If you want a person instead, hire a UK virtual assistant who names the AI tools they use and signs a data contract.
Can I get Claude Duet in the UK?
No, not yet. As of 23 October 2026, Claude Duet is a research preview for Claude Pro and Max subscribers in the US, through a waitlist, and Anthropic has given no UK date. UK Pro subscribers can use Claude's scheduled tasks and Cowork in the meantime.
Which personal AI agents can I use in the UK right now?
Grok Bot, Claude Cowork, ChatGPT Dots on a Business Premium seat and the self-hosted OpenClaw all work in the UK as of 23 October 2026. Claude Duet and Meta Muse do not. Smaller assistants such as Bond, Upstream, Acti, OpenHuman and Happycapy had no UK restrictions when I reviewed them.
What is the best free AI personal assistant?
For most people, the free plan of ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini is the best free start. For email, Upstream's free plan drafts seven replies a week in Gmail. To keep your data private, OpenHuman and OpenClaw are free, open-source assistants that can run on your own Mac with a local model.
Where is my data stored if I use an AI assistant in the UK?
Usually in the United States, even if you sign up in the UK. Claude, ChatGPT, Grok Bot, Bond, Hey Noah and Happycapy all process UK users' data in the US. Only an assistant that runs on your own computer, such as OpenHuman with a local model, keeps your data at home.
What is a personal AI assistant?
Software that handles your own admin: drafting and sorting email, managing your diary, researching questions, summarising documents and reminding you what is due. The best ones now act on your behalf rather than only answering, which makes them mild AI agents.
Which personal AI assistant is best in the UK?
There is no single best. ChatGPT Plus is the broadest; Claude Pro is strongest on writing and long documents; Google AI Pro fits Gmail and Drive users; Microsoft 365 Premium fits Outlook and Word users. If privacy matters most, an on-device assistant on a Mac keeps everything local.
How much does a personal AI assistant cost?
The main paid tiers cost £18 to £20 a month in the UK as of 23 October 2026, and all four have usable free tiers. An on-device assistant costs nothing beyond a Mac with 16 GB or more of memory.
Is it safe to give an AI assistant my email and calendar?
It depends on where the assistant runs and what it may do. Cloud assistants send your data to the vendor; check the data-use terms and switch off training on your content. Give any assistant read access first, keep sending and deleting as approval steps, and start with the least sensitive account.
Can a personal AI assistant work offline?
Yes, if it runs on your own device. Tools such as Ollama, LM Studio, Jan and Msty run a model on a Mac with no internet connection. The models are smaller than the cloud flagships but handle email, notes and research well.
What should I use it for first?
One job that repeats daily and costs little if it goes wrong: a morning summary of your inbox, drafting replies you approve, or turning meeting notes into actions. Expand only once the first job runs without surprises.
Can an AI PA assistant replace a human PA?
For inbox triage, diary management and research, an AI PA assistant now covers much of the routine for £18 to £20 a month. It cannot judge relationships, handle sensitive conversations or take responsibility for a decision, so most people use one alongside a human PA, or instead of having none.

What is a personal AI agent?
A personal AI agent is an always-on assistant that works on its own computer in the cloud and carries out tasks for you, such as sorting email, booking tables or chasing replies, then checks with you before important actions. Claude Duet, Meta Muse, ChatGPT Dots, Instinct and Grok Bot are examples. Most are not yet sold to personal users in the UK.
Is Meta Muse available in the UK?
No. As of 23 October 2026 Muse is available only in the US, Canada and, from 23 October, Japan, and Meta has given no UK date. UK users who want a personal AI agent now can buy Grok Bot, use ChatGPT Dots through a ChatGPT Business Premium seat, or run a self-hosted agent such as OpenClaw or Hermes Agent.
